Eczema

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a common allergic reaction often affecting the face, inside the elbows and behind the knees. This red, scaly, itchy rash is usually seen in young infants and children, but can occur later in life. Frequently the patient with eczema will have a personal or family history of allergic disease such as asthma or allergic rhinitis “hay fever”. Statistics show approximately 27% of children who have a food allergy also have eczema or a skin allergy and that eczema affects between 15% of children and 2% of adults in the United States.

Intense itching is the hallmark symptom of eczema. Identifying the cause of the itch is essential in controlling eczema. The term “the itch that rashes” has often been used to describe eczema. Common triggers include allergens such as animal dander, house dust, pollen, as well as certain foods.

Allergists are trained to treat patients with eczema by detecting the triggers of this disease.
